European Union Mandates Labels for AI‑Generated Media Starting August 2

From 2 August 2026, the European Union’s AI Act will require all AI‑generated images, video, audio and text to carry a clear label indicating its synthetic origin. The rule applies to professional and editorial content, including chatbots and generative tools used by media organisations. Companies that fail to comply risk substantial fines, and the regulation gives platforms such as TikTok, Meta’s Instagram and Facebook, Google and OpenAI a deadline of 2 December 2026 to implement detection and watermarking technologies. Exemptions exist for artistic, satirical or fictional works.

On 21 August 2026, the National University of San Martín (UNSAM) in Argentina will host a multidisciplinary conference titled “Truth and Lie in Contemporary Politics: Fiction, AI and Fake News.” The event gathers philosophers, political theorists, historians and digital‑media scholars to discuss how AI‑driven disinformation challenges democratic discourse. Speakers include Dolores Amat, Tomás Borovinsky, Hernán Confino, Lara Goyburu and others from UNSAM, UBA and the media sector.
