European Union mandates user-replaceable batteries by 2027

Starting February 18, 2027, new European Union regulations will mandate that manufacturers design smartphones and tablets to allow users to replace batteries easily and independently. Under Regulation (EU) 2023/1542, devices must be constructed so that batteries can be removed and replaced using commonly available tools, such as a screwdriver, without the need for specialized service equipment, adhesives, solvents, or heat.

To support this transition, companies must ensure the availability of replacement batteries for at least five years after a model is withdrawn from the market at a reasonable price. While there are concerns regarding device durability and water resistance, existing ecodesign regulations provide exceptions for manufacturers who can demonstrate that such changes do not compromise essential device protections.
