European Union moves to tighten vehicle inspections across Greece

The European Union is drafting a new framework that will make technical vehicle inspections (KTEO) in Greece considerably stricter. The proposal, still being negotiated between the European Parliament and member states, calls for detailed checks of mechanical condition, emissions and advanced safety electronics such as airbags, emergency‑brake‑assist and other driver‑aid systems. Vehicles that show warning lights, have faulty safety software or are subject to unresolved manufacturer recalls could be refused certification.

Implementation is expected to begin gradually from 2026, requiring inspection stations to upgrade diagnostic equipment and gain access to manufacturers’ technical data. The rules will target older diesel cars, especially those with removed or defective particulate‑filter (DPF) systems and malfunctioning SCR or AdBlue components, as well as electric vehicles whose high‑voltage and wiring systems will be examined. Remote sensors may also be used to detect unusually high emissions on the road and direct vehicles for further testing.
