European Union moves toward visa waivers for five Gulf nations
The Council of the European Union has adopted five official conclusions to initiate the process of studying potential Schengen visa waivers for citizens of five Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries: Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, and Qatar.
The Council welcomed the European Commission's initiative to launch the necessary procedures while emphasizing that EU institutions and member states must be involved in all stages of the negotiation process. Any final waiver remains contingent upon each country meeting specific technical and security criteria through independent, comprehensive assessments.
No official timeline has been set for the implementation of such a decision. This move reflects the European Union's strategy to strengthen strategic partnerships and economic and political ties with the Gulf region. Currently, the United Arab Emirates is the only GCC nation whose citizens benefit from a Schengen visa waiver for short-term stays.
