European Union negotiates 2028–2034 multiannual budget

The European Union is currently negotiating its multiannual financial framework for the 2028–2034 period. Discussions focus on allocating resources for defense, competitiveness, and support for Ukraine, while the European People's Party advocates for increased funding alongside continued support for agriculture and regional development.

Controversy has emerged regarding the proposed AgoraEU program, which integrates Creative Europe and the Citizens, Equality, Rights and Values (CERV) program. While the European Commission initially proposed €8.582 billion for AgoraEU, the Irish Presidency of the Council of the EU has proposed reducing this to €6.007 billion—a 30% cut.

Over 1,000 European organizations have protested this reduction, arguing it would be “devastating” for culture, independent journalism, and civil society. Critics note that while the cut represents only 0.14% of the total EU budget, it would result in a loss of nearly one-third of support for fundamental rights and artistic sectors.
