European Union pesticide deregulation sparks civil mobilization
The European Union is moving toward a vote on the ‘Omnibus X’ pesticide package, a legislative proposal that critics argue represents a significant deregulation of chemical and biocide controls. The proposed changes could substantially extend or even eliminate the expiration dates for pesticide authorizations. Currently, these authorizations typically last 10 to 15 years, allowing for periodic scientific re-evaluations of a substance’s impact on human health and biodiversity.
Civil society groups, including environmental, health, and patient advocacy organizations, are mobilizing against the proposal. They warn that bypassing regular scientific reviews could lead to irreversible damage to ecosystems and increased risks of neurodegenerative diseases and cancer. Protests have already occurred, including a demonstration of approximately 8,000 people near a Syngenta plant in France, with further mobilizations planned for October 10 and 11 to influence the upcoming trilogue negotiations.
