European Union pesticide rules could spike coffee prices

The European Union is considering stricter regulations regarding pesticide residues in imported agricultural products. The proposal aims to reduce the presence of certain hazardous substances to near-zero levels, effectively requiring foreign producers to align with EU health and environmental standards to maintain market access.

An analysis by the Joint Research Centre suggests that if international producers, particularly from regions like Africa, the Americas, and Brazil, fail to adapt, the impact on supply and pricing could be severe. In a worst-case scenario, coffee prices could rise by as much as 332%, while citrus fruits could see increases of over 80%.

Such measures are intended to level the playing field for European farmers who must already adhere to strict sanitary norms. However, the potential for a 41% drop in agricultural imports and increased costs for animal feed and consumer goods presents a significant economic challenge for the bloc.
