European Union pledges aid to Colombia after devastating earthquake

The European Union has released 2 million euros in aid to support Colombia following a devastating 7.4-magnitude earthquake. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced the funding is intended to assist communities in the most heavily impacted areas.

The earthquake, identified by the USGS as having an epicenter near San José del Palmar in the Chocó department, is described as the most destructive to hit Colombia this century. Preliminary reports indicate at least 111 to 250 deaths and numerous injuries. The disaster has caused significant infrastructure damage, including the collapse of 61 buildings and damage to 18 health centers, 52 schools, and 1,575 homes.

To assist in rescue and recovery efforts, the EU has mobilized its Copernicus satellite service to provide critical data for operations on the ground.
