European Union prepares sanctions against 1,600 Russian entities

The European Union is preparing a major new sanctions package against Russia that could target approximately 1,600 individuals and legal entities. According to diplomatic sources cited by Politico, the list is expected to include roughly 800 individuals and 800 Russian companies.

This measure, which could be one of Brussels’ largest since the start of the conflict in Ukraine, is expected to focus primarily on the Russian military-industrial complex. Proposed measures include travel bans, transaction restrictions, and the freezing of assets for the sanctioned parties. The package is being developed in response to reports of increased Russian ‘hybrid activities’ within EU member states.

The European External Action Service is expected to present the list to member states in early September, with a goal of formal adoption during the EU leaders' summit in October. Because adoption requires unanimous consent from all member states, the final content of the package may undergo changes during negotiations.
