European Union prioritizes water management and infrastructure

The European Union is elevating water management to a central strategic priority to address the climate crisis, drought, and increasing infrastructure demands. During her State of the Union address, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen emphasized the need for investments in water infrastructure and the creation of a European framework to ensure water security and adequacy.

A key component of this strategy is the new European Water Initiative, which will serve as a mechanism to coordinate policies and investments. This approach treats water as critical infrastructure essential for economic stability, security, and urban resilience. The strategy also includes the OceanEye initiative for monitoring aquatic ecosystems and the Climate Security Alliance.

In Greece, the Ministry of Environment and Energy is aligning its domestic initiatives with this European framework. Under the leadership of Minister Stavros Papastavrou, Greek efforts are focusing on institutional reforms that connect water policy with infrastructure funding, flood and drought protection, and climate adaptation measures.
