European Union provides €175,000 emergency aid for Sierra Leone floods

The European Union has announced a €175,000 emergency aid package to assist communities in Sierra Leone following devastating floods in Freetown and the Western Area Urban District. The funding, described as an “expression of European solidarity,” will be channeled through the Sierra Leone Red Cross Society and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.

The assistance aims to support 5,100 people across 27 affected communities. The aid package includes multipurpose cash transfers, emergency shelter, livelihood recovery, health support, and water and sanitation services to prevent disease outbreaks. Priority will be given to vulnerable groups, such as women, children, older persons, and people with disabilities.

The floods, triggered by six hours of continuous heavy rainfall on August 3, caused significant destruction in low-lying areas. Local reports indicate that at least four people died and more than 700 homes were damaged or destroyed. The disaster has also contaminated 18 community boreholes and disrupted local livelihoods and the urban economy.
