European Union publishes revised ESG reporting standards
The European Union has published the final revised European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS) in the Official Journal. Mandated under the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), these standards require approximately 50,000 companies operating within the EU to disclose detailed environmental, social, and governance (ESG) data starting in 2024.
The standards aim to increase transparency, mitigate greenwashing, and provide consistent data regarding climate change, biodiversity, and human rights to investors and regulators. In addition to the mandatory ESRS, the European Commission has also reviewed voluntary standards for companies that fall below the CSRD threshold. These voluntary standards are intended to provide a framework for smaller entities to report sustainability information without exceeding the requirements of the value chain.
Industry groups, such as the AFG, have noted that the technical standards align with previous suggestions for simplification, helping investment managers analyze targets and meet regulatory obligations like the SFDR. While some industry members have raised concerns regarding the costs and complexity of compliance, the move signals a formal integration of sustainability into corporate governance.
