European Union rejects Ukraine's request to renegotiate export quotas
The European Commission has rejected a request from Ukraine to renegotiate its current agricultural export quotas. A spokesperson for the Commission confirmed that no discussions are planned to revise the existing trade terms.
Trade relations have become a sensitive issue within the European Union following the 2022 decision to grant Ukraine tariff-free and quota-free access. This led to an influx of agricultural goods that sparked protests among European farmers. In response, the EU reintroduced quotas last year for products including wheat, sugar, and eggs.
While Ukraine has specifically sought an increased quota for bioethanol exports derived from its grain harvests, the EU maintains that current trade data proves the revised volumes are ‘fair and balanced.’ The current quota system has reduced imports of Ukrainian wheat and sugar compared to the initial quota-free period, though volumes remain higher than pre-war levels. This comes as intensifying Russian attacks continue to damage Ukrainian infrastructure and disrupt Black Sea export routes.
