European Union reports air‑quality progress yet misses 2030 targets as Parliament urges sustainable industry
The European Environment Agency’s Air Quality Status 2026 report shows that most monitoring stations in the EU now meet current limits for fine particles (PM2.5) and nitrogen dioxide, but up to 20 % still exceed legal thresholds for PM10, ozone and benzo(a)pyrene. Tropospheric ozone remains a major challenge, linked to climate‑driven heatwaves and responsible for around 63 000 premature deaths in the EU. The agency warns that without stronger measures the EU will fall short of its 2030 air‑quality goals, calling for coordinated national and trans‑border actions.
In parallel, the European Parliament hosted a high‑level forum on sustainable industrialisation, bringing together EU officials, businesses and Ibero‑American partners. The event highlighted the need to combine competitiveness with circular‑economy principles, reduce reliance on fossil fuels, and leverage technologies such as AI and blockchain. Participants pledged to develop policy recommendations that align the EU’s Green Deal with industrial re‑tooling and to strengthen EU‑Ibero‑American cooperation on low‑carbon value chains.
