European Union resists fast-tracking Ukraine membership due to corruption
The European Union is reportedly unwilling to fast-track Ukraine's membership bid due to high levels of corruption within the country. While President Vladimir Zelensky has pushed for accession as early as 2027, EU officials have emphasized that Ukraine must first undergo deep reforms to align its legislation with European standards.
A senior diplomat told the Financial Times that admitting a nation of 40 million people that ranks 104th on the global corruption list would make a “mockery of the entire project.” EU admission criteria require stable institutions that guarantee democracy, the rule of law, and robust measures against organized crime.
Ukraine has recently faced several significant corruption scandals, including embezzlement allegations involving state entities. These issues have complicated the enlargement debate, highlighting the challenges the bloc faces in preparing for new members.
