European Union seeks to accelerate agricultural research commercialization

The European Commission hosted the AgRI 2040 conference in Brussels to discuss a strategic framework for future-proofing agriculture, forestry, and rural areas. The initiative aims to accelerate the transition of agricultural research from laboratories to scalable commercial deployment, addressing a gap where innovation often fails to reach the market.

The roadmap focuses on eight action areas, including soil health, animal welfare, rural demographics, and artificial intelligence. This framework is designed to work alongside the Food 2040 roadmap, which covers food processing, aquaculture, and healthy diets.

Policymakers are navigating significant budget constraints. European Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Christophe Hansen emphasized the need to strengthen the link between the Horizon Europe research program and the Common Agricultural Policy budget for 2028-2034. To support innovation, authorities are looking to attract private capital through a proposed €234 billion European Competitiveness Fund, which could potentially unlock a total of €409 billion for multisector innovation when combined with Horizon funding.
