European Union strengthens migration and return policies
The European Union is implementing stricter migration policies focused on accelerating deportations and strengthening external borders. EU Interior Ministers have agreed on new rules that allow for the creation of return centers in third countries, provided that international human rights standards and the principle of non-refoulement are respected. Under these regulations, migrants who do not cooperate with return processes may face sanctions, including fines or reduced benefits. For individuals deemed security risks, states may impose indefinite entry bans or detention exceeding 24 months.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has outlined five priorities for EU migration management ahead of the upcoming summit in Brussels. These include the full implementation of the Migration and Asylum Pact, the strengthening of Frontex through a new European Border and Return Reserve, and the creation of a Return Coordination Center. While irregular border crossings have decreased by 55% over the last two years, von der Leyen emphasized the need for rapid response capabilities to manage sudden mass arrivals and ensure the integrity of the Schengen Area.
