Data center investment projected to exceed $1 trillion by 2027
The global data center market is experiencing an unprecedented investment surge, driven by the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence. Annual investment is projected to double from approximately $500 billion in 2024 to over $1 trillion by 2027. While the United States and China are expected to account for roughly 62% of new global capacity through 2030, emerging markets are increasingly becoming key players in the AI infrastructure race.
However, this growth faces significant physical and logistical hurdles. A primary bottleneck is energy availability. The International Energy Agency warns that global electricity consumption by data centers could reach 945 TWh by 2030. In major European hubs (FLAP-D), grid connection wait times can range from seven to thirteen years, creating a competitive advantage for regions like Poland, where the average wait time is estimated at approximately three years.
Technological advancements are also targeting these constraints. AMD has reported a fourfold improvement in energy efficiency for AI workloads between 2024 and 2026, aiming for a twentyfold increase in rack-scale efficiency by 2030. Additionally, the environmental impact, particularly regarding water consumption, remains a subject of intense scrutiny as the industry seeks more sustainable cooling and power solutions.
