European Union to cap cash payments at 10,000 euros by 2027

The European Union is set to implement a new regulation capping cash payments at 10,000 euros for business transactions starting July 10, 2027. This measure is part of a broader anti-money laundering and counter-terrorist financing package designed to increase financial transparency and track illegal money flows.

The 10,000 euro limit applies to purchases of goods and services from businesses, such as vehicles, jewelry, or high-end electronics. To prevent evasion, the regulation prohibits splitting a single transaction into multiple smaller cash payments to stay under the threshold. However, private transactions between individuals, such as the sale of a used car between neighbors, remain exempt from these restrictions.

Additionally, the regulation introduces a lower threshold of 3,000 euros for identity verification. For cash transactions exceeding this amount, businesses will be required to identify and record the customer's identity. While the EU sets a common ceiling, member states retain the right to implement stricter national limits, as seen in countries like Denmark and France.
