European Union to ban certain PFAS chemicals in consumer goods by 2026
The European Union is implementing new restrictions on per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), often referred to as ‘forever chemicals’ due to their inability to break down in the environment or the human body.
A regulation passed in September 2024 will lead to a significant ban starting October 10, 2026. This specific phase targets the PFHxA subgroup, its salts, and chemically related compounds. After this date, products exceeding established limit values for these substances may no longer be placed on the market.
The ban will impact a wide range of everyday consumer goods, including waterproof clothing and accessories made from textiles, leather, fur, and skins. Additionally, the regulation prohibits the use of these chemicals in food-contact paper and cardboard, such as pizza boxes and coated paper cups. Cosmetics and various skin care products are also among the items affected by the upcoming restrictions.
