European Union to ban certain products containing ‘forever chemicals’

The European Commission has adopted a regulation that will introduce new restrictions on ‘forever chemicals’ known as PFAS, specifically targeting perfluorohexanoic acid (PFHxA), its salts, and related substances. Starting October 10, 2026, certain consumer products containing these substances above specific concentration limits will be prohibited from the EU market.

The new limits are set at 25 ppb for the sum of PFHxA and its salts, and 1000 ppb for the sum of related substances, measured in homogeneous material. These chemicals are valued for their resistance to water, grease, dirt, and high temperatures, but are being restricted due to their high environmental persistence and mobility in water.

The ban will impact a wide range of consumer goods, including cosmetics (such as waterproof mascaras, eyeliners, foundations, and concealers), clothing and accessories (like raincoats and backpacks), footwear, and various impregnation sprays and preparations.
