European Union to ban single-use plastic packaging in restaurants by 2030

The European Union is implementing the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) to establish a unified framework for resource protection. A key component of this regulation is a ban on unnecessary single-use plastic packaging in restaurants, effective from 2030.

Under the new rules, items intended for a single meal, such as ketchup packets, individual soy sauce containers, and single-portion coffee creamers, will largely be prohibited. The regulation specifically targets packaging used for dine-in services.

Certain exceptions apply to the mandate. Single-use packaging for sugar and milk remains permitted for beverages ordered to go. Additionally, hospitals and care facilities are exempt from the ban to maintain necessary hygiene standards.
