European Union to condemn Russia's Ukraine war at G20 summit

The European Union has announced its intention to condemn Russia's invasion of Ukraine during the upcoming G20 summit in Miami this December. EU spokesperson Olof Gill stated that the bloc will maintain this stance “irrespective of the participants at any G20 meeting,” noting that the EU has consistently used the forum to address the consequences of the war since 2022.

The summit, hosted by the United States, has extended an official invitation to Russian President Vladimir Putin. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio suggested the meeting could provide an opportunity for engagement between Putin and other world leaders. However, the invitation has faced criticism from European officials, including EU diplomacy chief Kaja Kallas, who expressed concern that Putin's participation might contribute to the normalization of relations with Russia.

While the EU and several member states, including France, Germany, and Italy, are part of the G20, some allies have called for Russia's exclusion from the group following the invasion. The announcement comes amid ongoing conflict, with reports of continued Russian strikes on Ukrainian civilians.
