EU to implement ETIAS travel authorization for visa-free citizens

The European Union is preparing to implement the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS), a new mandatory electronic travel authorization for citizens of countries with visa-free access to the Schengen Area. The system is expected to become operational in the final quarter of this year, though an exact start date has not yet been announced.

ETIAS is not a visa, but a security screening process similar to the United States' ESTA system. Travelers must apply online, providing personal data and passport information to undergo automated security checks. The application fee is set at 20 euros. Once approved, the authorization is valid for up to three years or until the traveler's passport expires, allowing for multiple entries with a maximum stay of 90 days within any 180-day period.

Certain demographics, such as individuals under 18 and over 70, will be exempt from the fee, though they must still apply for and receive authorization. Transport providers will be required to verify ETIAS status before boarding, meaning travelers without valid authorization may be prevented from traveling by air or bus.
