European Union to implement stricter animal welfare regulations

New European Union animal welfare regulations are set to introduce stricter requirements for pet owners, specifically targeting dog and cat owners. Most of these provisions are scheduled to be implemented by August 31, 2028.

Key changes include restrictions on tethering animals; for instance, dogs may not be kept on a chain for more than one hour, with limited exceptions for veterinary treatment or specific events. The regulations also emphasize the need to avoid keeping animals in ways that unnecessarily restrict their natural movement, a point particularly relevant for working sheepdogs and guard dogs, who must be provided with freedom of movement during non-working hours.

Additionally, owners must provide adequate shelter to protect animals from extreme weather conditions. The new rules also mandate more precise care standards, such as requiring dogs to be fed at least twice daily and provided with sufficient quantities of high-quality drinking water.
