European Union to launch digital identity wallet by 2026

The European Union is preparing to launch the European Digital Identity Wallet, a system designed to allow citizens to store and present various identification documents and credentials via smartphone. This initiative, stemming from the eIDAS 2.0 regulation that entered into force in May 2024, aims to create a unified digital identity valid both online and in person across all EU Member States.

The European Commission has set the end of 2026 as the target deadline for making these wallets available to citizens. The wallet is intended to hold a wide range of digital credentials, including personal identification data, digital driver's licenses, diplomas, and academic qualifications.

Usage of the digital wallet will be voluntary. The European Union has clarified that citizens will not be forced to use the digital system, and physical documents will remain valid for identification purposes.
