European Union to launch digital identity wallet this year

The European Union is preparing to launch the European Digital Identity Wallet (EUDI Wallet), an application expected to be available within this year. The app is designed to transform smartphones into secure vaults for official documents valid across the EU.

Users will be able to store various credentials, including identity cards, driver's licenses, academic or professional diplomas, and medical prescriptions. The wallet will also support digital signatures that hold the same legal weight as handwritten signatures for personal use.

A key feature of the EUDI Wallet is selective sharing, which enhances user privacy. Instead of revealing an entire document, the app allows users to share only the specific data required for a service. For example, when verifying age for restricted services, the wallet can confirm a user is over 18 without disclosing their exact date of birth, address, or photo.
