European Union to mandate replaceable batteries by 2027
New European Union regulations, specifically Regulation (EU) 2023/1542, will require that portable batteries in various consumer electronics be removable and replaceable by users. This mandate is set to take full effect in February 2027, though specific rules for smartphones and tablets are expected to apply as early as June 2025.
The legislation aims to reduce electronic waste and promote sustainability by ensuring that devices like headphones, Bluetooth speakers, smartwatches, and vacuum cleaners do not become obsolete simply because their batteries can no longer hold a charge. While the law does not require tool-free removal, it prohibits the use of proprietary tools, heat, or solvents that could damage the product or battery.
Certain exceptions exist for medical devices, equipment where permanent power is essential for safety, or products where battery separation could compromise data integrity. The initiative is part of a broader EU effort to increase the recycling of critical materials such as lithium, cobalt, lead, and nickel.
