European Union to resume equine imports from Uruguay
The European Union will resume the import of equines from Uruguay starting October 22. This decision follows a favorable evaluation of the sanitary surveillance program presented by Uruguay’s Ministry of Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries (MGAP).
The suspension of equine imports had been in place since April following the detection of a surra outbreak at an establishment in Tacuarembó. While European regulations generally require a 24-month period without surra cases, the Commission allowed for a reduced timeframe provided that the origin establishment has remained case-free for at least six months and a recognized surveillance program is in place.
Uruguayan authorities will continue serological sampling and controls to maintain sanitary conditions and meet all required standards.
