EU denies rejecting invitation to observe Nigeria’s 2027 elections

The European Union (EU) Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS has denied reports claiming it rejected an invitation from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to observe Nigeria’s 2027 general elections. EU Ambassador Gautier Mignot described reports suggesting the bloc was withdrawing due to security concerns or hostile treatment of officials as ‘pure speculations’ and ‘inaccurate’.

Instead of a full-scale observation mission, the EU confirmed it will deploy an Electoral Expert Mission (EEM) consisting of two to four independent experts. The delegation explained that the type of mission is decided annually based on individual country situations and available resources. The EEM will assess whether the electoral process complies with international, regional, and national democratic obligations and will submit a final report with recommendations for improving the electoral framework.

The clarification follows claims by some media outlets and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that the EU was boycotting the polls. The PDP characterized the reported scaling back as a ‘vote of no confidence’ in the current administration’s election management. The EU emphasized that its decision does not affect ongoing projects, such as the ‘Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria’ initiative.
