European Union to set 10,000 euro cash payment limit in 2027
The European Union will implement a harmonized maximum limit of 10,000 euros for cash payments in commercial transactions starting in 2027. This regulation is part of a 2024 anti-money laundering package approved by the European Parliament and the Council.
The new rule aims to combat tax fraud and money laundering by reducing untraceable cash movements. While the EU-wide limit is set at 10,000 euros, individual member states may implement stricter regulations. For instance, Spain already maintains a more restrictive limit of 1,000 euros for cash transactions between individuals and businesses or professionals under its existing tax fraud prevention laws.
The 2027 implementation date was chosen to allow financial supervision systems to adapt to the new requirements.
