European Union daylight saving time transition scheduled for October 2026

The European Union will transition from summer time to winter time during the night of Saturday, October 24, to Sunday, October 25, 2026. Following the established rule of shifting clocks on the last Sunday of October, clocks will be set back one hour at 03:00 to 02:00. This specific date represents the earliest possible transition allowed by the current regulatory framework.

While the practice was originally implemented to conserve energy by maximizing daylight, the seasonal shift remains a subject of debate. Although the European Commission proposed abolishing seasonal time changes in 2018 and the European Parliament supported the move in 2019, EU member states have not reached a consensus on whether to permanently adopt summer or winter time. Consequently, the biannual adjustment continues.

Scientific discussions regarding the change focus on its impact on human health. Experts note that the shift can disrupt circadian rhythms, potentially affecting sleep, metabolism, and hormone regulation. While the transition provides an extra hour of sleep, it also results in earlier sunsets, which may influence social activities and psychological well-being.
