European Union proposes new firefighting fleet and heatwave plan
Following a devastating summer of extreme weather, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has proposed a new European Heatwave Plan and the development of a dedicated European firefighting aircraft fleet. The summer of 2026 saw approximately 700,000 hectares of land burned across the European Union, with sixteen member states recording above-average wildfire activity. The economic impact from heatwaves, droughts, and fires is estimated at 28.3 billion euros, with the agricultural sector facing significant pressure.
In response to the crisis, Commissioner Hadja Lahbib announced plans to unify firefighting capabilities, potentially creating a permanent corps of ‘European firefighters.’ Proposed measures include establishing a specialized firefighting center in Cyprus to support the Mediterranean region and utilizing the European Information System for Forest Fires (EFFIS) for better prediction and monitoring.
Additionally, the European Parliament is debating the creation of a dedicated European fund for climate disasters to improve prevention and preparedness. The extreme heatwaves also resulted in an estimated 35,000 additional deaths across the bloc. Officials emphasized that Europe is warming at twice the global rate, necessitating a shift from reactive emergency response to proactive climate resilience and insurance alliances.
