European Union updates driving rules for motorhomes

The European Union is implementing Directive (EU) 2025/2205, which updates driving license regulations regarding motorhomes. Under the new rules, holders of a standard category B license will be permitted to operate motorhomes with a maximum authorized mass of up to 4,250 kilograms. In certain cases involving a trailer, the total authorized mass may reach 5,000 kilograms.

This change addresses the increasing weight of modern motorhomes, which often exceed the current 3,500-kilogram limit due to added amenities such as kitchens, bathrooms, water tanks, and electrification. However, the extension is not automatic. Drivers must undergo additional training or pass a specific exam, depending on the requirements of their individual member state. This new authorization will be officially indicated on the driving license using the European code ‘96.02’.
