European Union updates vehicle technical inspection standards

The European Union is negotiating a new framework for periodic technical inspections (PTI) to modernize vehicle safety and environmental standards. The current inspection framework, designed over a decade ago, is being updated to address the technological advancements in modern vehicles, including the rise of electric and hybrid models.

The proposed changes aim to move beyond traditional mechanical checks to include electronic systems and software that impact safety and emissions. Key areas of focus include advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), such as emergency automatic braking. The European Parliament supports including these systems in mandatory inspections to ensure they function according to manufacturer specifications and to prevent unauthorized tampering with vehicle software and electronic controls.
