European Union warns of weapons returning from Ukraine battlefield
A confidential European Union Council document warns of security risks posed by weapons and military equipment being brought back to the EU by combatants returning from the front lines in Ukraine. While member states have reported instances of individuals possessing military components, there is currently no evidence linking these cases to organized smuggling operations.
Authorities are concerned that battlefield equipment could circulate within the bloc. The document also highlights the long-term risk posed by foreign fighters, including volunteers and mercenaries, who may use their acquired military expertise for criminal or terrorist activities upon their return.
In response to these concerns, several EU nations have advocated for banning current and former Russian combatants from entering the union. While a proposed ban in the 21st sanctions package was previously diluted due to opposition from France and Italy, EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas indicated broad support for such visa restrictions. Additionally, Estonia has initiated an intelligence-sharing operation with other eastern flank nations to coordinate entry refusals for identified Russian combatants.
