European Universities Confront AI Overhaul

Artificial intelligence is rapidly reshaping higher education across Europe. Universities such as Oxford acknowledge the pressure, with Sara Ratner, director of Oxford's AI in Education Observatory, noting the sector is "going through a difficult economic and social moment" and that AI may be the catalyst needed for reform.

Researchers stress that AI tools must be used responsibly. Stefanos Tyros of the University of Innsbruck warned that relying on AI without a solid foundational understanding could reduce productivity, while Dimitris Sampson of the University of Piraeus argued that large campuses must justify their cost in an era of increased remote learning, emphasizing the value of human collaboration.

The AI wave also impacts technical professions. Spyros Troumpetas of the Eugenides Foundation highlighted acute skill shortages in sectors such as industry, maritime logistics and construction, and illustrated how roles like warehouse pickers now require digital competencies. He pointed out that technical jobs now offer higher salaries and strong career prospects, urging young people to consider these fields.
