Salerno hosts European Universities Games 2026 with 4,000 athletes from 32 nations

From 18 July to 1 August 2026 the city of Salerno in southern Italy hosted the European Universities Games, the continent’s premier multi‑sport university competition. Over 4,000 student‑athletes, officials and coaches from 32 countries and 171 universities competed in 13 disciplines across venues in Salerno, Fisciano, Baronissi and surrounding communes.

The opening ceremony featured a parade of delegations, the mascot “Splash” and a cultural programme highlighting the Mediterranean theme. Local officials—including Mayor Vincenzo De Luca, University of Salerno rector Virgilio D’Antonio and Regional President Roberto Fico—emphasised the event’s role in promoting peace, dialogue and regional development.

French university teams, such as Montpellier’s men’s volleyball squad, performed strongly, winning their pool with three straight victories. The event also served as a networking platform: a delegation from Aveiro, Portugal met with EUSA organisers to discuss a bid for the 2032 edition, while the local construction association ANCE AIES Salerno supported the Games with a welcome brunch and reinforced ties with the university.

The Games provided a showcase for student sport, cultural exchange and a boost to Salerno’s international profile.
