European University Games 2026 in Salerno celebrates rugby victories and opening ceremony

The second day of the 2026 European University Games in Salerno featured a dominant performance by the CUS Parma rugby sevens squad. The team beat the University of Aachen 36‑0, with Busetto and Cecchini each scoring ten points, and then routed the University of Sannio 73‑0, highlighted by Matteo Sorio’s 21 points. CUS Parma will meet the French side from the University of Rennes in the next round.

Lorenzo Lentini, president of CUS Salerno, lauded the overall success of the Games, noting participation by over 2,000 athletes from 31 European countries and 172 universities. He praised the work of more than 1,000 volunteers and staff in delivering sport facilities, transport, and hospitality. The opening ceremony in Piazza della Libertà attracted thousands, and a closing ceremony is scheduled for 1 August in Piazza del Sapere, after which the event flag will pass to Split, Croatia, the host of the next edition.
