Germany electric car registrations reach 24.8% of new‑car market in first half of 2026

In the first six months of 2026 battery‑electric vehicles (BEVs) accounted for 24.8 % of all new‑car registrations in Germany, a 48 % jump year‑on‑year. Alternative‑drive vehicles (including hybrids, plug‑in hybrids and fuel‑cell cars) totalled 65.1 % of new registrations, up 21.7 % from the previous period. The KBA data show Skoda taking the lead among imports with 36 654 BEV registrations, pushing Tesla to second place (28 857). Volkswagen remained the biggest German brand with 49 495 BEVs but fell 5.6 % despite the overall boom. Regionally, Rhine‑Land‑Pfalz and Schleswig‑Holstein posted the highest BEV shares at about 30 % and 29 % respectively, while Hamburg and Saxony‑Anhalt lag behind. A consumer survey revealed that 30 % of respondents would choose an electric car for a summer holiday, though 26 % still cite charging availability as their main concern. The trends illustrate a rapid shift toward electrification across new‑car sales, fleet purchases and consumer attitudes in Germany.
