European villages launch cash incentives to reverse rural depopulation

Several municipalities in Spain are offering financial incentives to attract new residents to their shrinking rural towns. Examples include Ponga in Asturias, which provides up to €3,000 for young couples who move there and have children, and Griegos in Teruel, where rent can be as low as €225 per month with additional discounts for families. Other villages such as Rubiá in Galicia and A Xesta also offer subsidies ranging from €1,500 to a year of free accommodation for newcomers who commit to community work.

In Italy, the medieval hill‑top town of Santo Stefano di Sessanio in Abruzzo has introduced a program that offers virtually free housing, an annual cash grant of up to €8,000 for three years, and a one‑off incentive of up to €20,000 for entrepreneurs. The scheme aims to attract young families and entrepreneurs to sustain local services, shops and cultural traditions.

Both initiatives reflect a broader European effort to combat rural depopulation by using direct financial support, affordable housing and business grants to encourage permanent settlement in remote areas.
