European Volleyball Championship progresses amid debate over Russian return

The Men's European Volleyball Championship 2026 continues as the group stage nears its conclusion. Following the completion of groups B and D, teams including Poland, Bulgaria, Ukraine, Portugal, France, Germany, Romania, and Latvia have secured advancement to the round of 16.

Upcoming matches in groups A and C feature high-stakes competition, including a significant matchup between undefeated Italy and Slovenia. In Tampere, Serbia and Belgium will compete for second place in their group.

Amidst the tournament, former volleyball player Zbigniew Bartman has commented on the FIVB's decision to allow Russian male and female teams to return to international competition starting next year. Bartman stated that while he does not view Russia as allies, the return is “very good for sport” as it raises the competitive level of the tournament. He also addressed criticisms of the decision by calling for consistency in how the international sporting community handles nations involved in military conflicts.
