European wine harvests conclude early due to heat and drought

The 2026 wine harvest in several European regions, including Rheinhessen in Germany and parts of Switzerland, has concluded significantly earlier than usual due to extreme heat and drought.

In Rheinhessen, Germany, the harvest was completed in approximately four weeks, with mechanical harvesters working since late August. While the drought and high temperatures reduced the overall volume of grapes, the sanitary condition of the fruit is described as “extraordinarily good.” The heat prevented the development of fungi and pests, such as the cherry vinegar fly, leading to high-quality grapes with strong aromatic profiles.

Similarly, in Switzerland, the harvest has been record-breakingly early. A mild winter followed by a warm spring and a hot, dry summer accelerated grape ripening. While some vines experienced heat stress and yields were lower in many areas, the small, healthy berries are expected to produce concentrated and characterful wines. In the Jura region, harvesting began as early as August 15.
