European winter forecasts predict warmer, wetter conditions
Seasonal weather models from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) suggest a winter characterized by above-average temperatures and increased precipitation across much of Europe. While central, southern, and western Europe may experience milder and wetter conditions, the Mediterranean region is expected to remain drier. Increased rainfall does not necessarily guarantee more snow, as higher temperatures may result in rain at lower altitudes, though mountainous regions like the Alps could see significant snowfall.
The development of the winter may be influenced by a strengthening El Niño in the Pacific, which the World Meteorological Organization expects to remain intense through the end of winter. Historically, strong El Niño events are linked to warmer, wetter winters in Europe.
Additionally, models indicate a potential weakening of the polar vortex starting in late December. A disruption or reversal of these high-altitude Arctic winds could lead to sudden stratospheric warming, potentially allowing arctic air to penetrate further south during January and February. While current projections suggest more significant cold impacts for the central, southern, and eastern United States, northern Europe may face colder conditions if the polar vortex collapses.
