Europeans prioritize air conditioning access over carbon cuts

A YouGov survey conducted across France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain, and the United Kingdom indicates that many Europeans prioritize air conditioning accessibility over carbon reduction goals in response to intensifying heatwaves.

Between 61% and 73% of respondents across these nations believe air conditioning should be a standard feature in new homes. Additionally, 65% to 75% support easier approval processes for AC installation, while 52% to 66% favor government subsidies to offset costs. In every surveyed country except Italy, residents favored expanding AC use to mitigate heatwave harm over prioritizing CO2 cuts.

While AC ownership is significantly lower in Europe than in the United States, those with systems reported much higher ability to maintain comfortable indoor temperatures during extreme heat. For those without cooling, expense remains the primary barrier, cited by 51% to 75% of respondents. Many participants also suggested that governments implement alternative cooling measures, such as reflective roofs, insulation, and shutters.
