Europeans seek improved home cooling amid extreme heatwaves

Extreme summer temperatures are driving demand for improved home cooling solutions across Europe. A YouGov poll indicates that residents in France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain, and the UK are increasingly concerned about health risks associated with temperatures reaching or exceeding 40C.

There is widespread public support for making air conditioning a standard feature in new homes, alongside calls for simpler installation regulations and government subsidies. While mechanical cooling is a priority, many respondents also favor passive measures such as improved insulation, exterior shutters, and reflective roofs to manage heat.

Public opinion on the trade-off between cooling and environmental impact varies by region. In five of the surveyed countries, citizens prioritized reducing heatwave harm over prioritizing lower carbon dioxide emissions, though Italy was an exception to this trend.
