Europe’s electric vehicle registrations surge in May 2026

New registrations of battery‑electric vehicles (BEVs) in Europe rose sharply in the first five months of 2026. Data from the International Council on Clean Transportation show that BEVs captured a 22 % market share in May, a five‑percentage‑point increase over the same period in 2025, taking the year‑to‑date share to about 21 %. Growth was strongest in the biggest markets – France (+93 %), Italy (+85 %), Germany (+39 %) and Spain (+34 %) – while Poland saw a 26 % fall.

The surge is reflected in national trends. In the United Kingdom, EV sales over a 12‑month period in May 2026 exceeded petrol‑car sales for the first time, with 516,490 BEVs versus 504,010 petrol cars. Albania reported that 45 % of newly registered vehicles in the first half of the year were fully electric, a 197 % year‑on‑year rise. By contrast, Poland’s EV registrations dropped 28.5 % in May, illustrating divergent trajectories within the EU.

Overall, the shift is reducing the share of conventional combustion‑engine cars – which fell to 31 % of registrations in the January‑May window – and pushing hybrid models to a combined 39 % share. Analysts note that corporate fleets are adopting BEVs rapidly, and the trend is expected to help the EU approach its 2030 emissions targets.
