Europe's Green Hydrogen Industry Faces Slow Rollout and Geopolitical Risks
A Business Wire release notes that only about 11 % of green‑hydrogen projects announced in the 2020s are currently operating, despite the EU’s 2050 climate‑neutrality goal and China’s 2060 target. Researchers in Germany warn that strategies for green hydrogen often underestimate geopolitical hazards such as trade disputes, sanctions and fragile supply chains, which could reshape industrial locations and create new dependencies.
In the Netherlands, investment firm Meewind is financing the development of large‑scale green‑hydrogen production and related pilots. Partnerships with OrangeGas and HYGRO aim to expand hydrogen refueling stations and convert heating systems from natural gas to hydrogen, illustrating a domestic push to accelerate the energy transition.
Together, these reports highlight a market that is lagging behind policy ambitions, faces geopolitical uncertainty, and is being driven forward by private investment in Europe.
