Europe's Mobile Operators Boost 5G Investment and Upgrade Power Infrastructure
A GSMA study finds that European markets with three major mobile operators invest about 48% more per connection than markets with four or more operators. The higher spending translates into roughly 15% faster average download and upload speeds and faster rollout of 4G and 5G coverage, without raising consumer prices. The report estimates that €270 billion will be needed between 2026 and 2036 to maintain and upgrade Europe’s mobile network infrastructure, with an additional €200 billion required for the region to catch up with global digital leaders.
At the same time, telecom operators are redesigning tower power systems to meet the higher energy demand of dense 5G deployments. Modern solutions combine high‑efficiency rectifiers, DC power distribution units, and solar‑hybrid controllers to balance utility power, renewable inputs and battery storage, ensuring continuous operation of base stations even during grid outages.
