Europe's top destinations for 'stillcation' travel identified
A study by tour operator Inghams Walking has identified the top 15 "stillcation" destinations in Europe, focusing on locations that promote mental relaxation and intentional presence rather than activity-heavy itineraries.
The ranking analyzed nearly 100 destinations based on six environmental factors: air quality, birdsong richness, stargazing quality, population density, forest cover, and the number of walking trails per square kilometer. These elements are noted for helping the brain activate the "default mode network," a resting state that aids in memory consolidation and emotional processing.
Psychotherapist Eloise Skinner noted that such natural environments help travelers move into a "state of 'rest and digest' rather than 'fight or flight', and reducing our stress response and cognitive fatigue."
Wester Ross in Scotland was ranked as the top destination, characterized by its remote highlands, mountains, and low population density. Other high-ranking locations include the French Pyrenees, Abisko in Sweden, and the Engadin Valley in Switzerland.
